Electric Bikes vs. Traditional Bikes

October 14, 2021

Introduction

Biking has always been an excellent mode of transportation both for leisure and commute. It is environmentally friendly, cost-efficient, and a great way to stay fit. However, with the advancement of technology, we now have two options: traditional bikes and electric bikes. In this blog post, we will compare the pros and cons of electric bikes vs. traditional bikes.

Cost

One significant difference between traditional bikes and electric bikes is the cost. You can purchase a traditional bike for as low as $100, whereas the cost of an electric bike can range anywhere between $500 to $5000. However, even though electric bikes are costly, they can save you a lot of money in the long run. According to a study, electric bikes cost less than one-third of cars and were cheaper than traditional bicycles after only 21 days of use.

Sustainability

When it comes to environmental sustainability, both traditional bikes and electric bikes are great options. Traditional bikes do not produce any emissions, and apart from the occasional maintenance, they require no additional energy consumption. However, electric bikes consume electricity, and hence there is an argument that they are not entirely sustainable. But, compared to cars, electric bikes are still a much more sustainable option. According to a study, electric bikes emit around 22g of CO2 per km, whereas cars emit 271g of CO2 per km.

Practicality

When it comes to practicality, traditional bikes and electric bikes have different pros and cons. Traditional bikes are easy to ride, require minimal maintenance, and are great for exercise. But, they do have their limitations. Hills, long commutes and trips with a lot of luggage can be challenging. On the other hand, electric bikes are easier to ride uphill, require lesser physical effort and have a longer range. What's more, you can carry more luggage on an electric bike. But, they are heavier and require maintenance of their electric components.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both traditional bikes and electric bikes have their pros and cons. Traditional bikes are great for those who want a cost-efficient, environmentally friendly mode of transportation that they can use mainly for exercising. Electric bikes, on the other hand, are great for those who want a hassle-free, longer range alternative to cars without adding to the pollution. It all comes down to your personal preference, budget and how long of a commute you have.
